  1. In Québec, we've—unfortunately—been at front of COVID-19 waves in North America; probably because of our connections to Europe. Here's some information about what's going on here for friends who live elsewhere on this continent, but reasonably aren't paying attention to Quebec:

We have a population of around 8 million, here. Yesterday we had 1746 people with COVID in hospital. The org that reports these numbers (sante_qc) doesn't split out "in hospital *because of* COVID", though. Our previous record was <1700 (in May 2020) from what I can find.

According to our healthcare research institute's projections, that hospitalizations number could double in the next 2 weeks, exceeding our capacity to handle even not-COVID-related emergencies. Surgeries are postponed when possible. All healthcare is suffering—more than usual.

Aside from the expected limitations like masks and "no indoor dinning" (which is in effect), non-essential stores are required to close on Sundays. It sounds like more of this kind of restrictions are coming. All non-essential businesses must close before 10pm because…

I am not allowed to leave my own property between 10pm and 5am (other than for a few "essential" exceptions). This means I can't go for a walk with my partner. Can't drive anywhere, alone or not. If I throw the dog's toy over the fence, it's illegal for me to retrieve it.

It is illegal to have anyone in my house who does not live at my address. There are exceptions for caregivers and such, but we're led to believe that the police will knock on our door if there are too many cars parked outside.

I am not in an essential class of worker, so I do not qualify for testing anymore, unless I happened to get ahold of one of the scarce at-home tests when they were briefly available (more coming). I am not able to get a PCR test, and am unable to document a COVID recovery.

The reason for this is that we're doing around 50,000 tests per day. Our actual sustained capacity for this is reported at 30,000. Our positivity rate was > 31% yesterday and has been hovering around 30% (5% is considered out of control). We actually have no idea how many cases.

I was very much on top of getting my first 2 doses of the vaccine: I booked as soon as possible, and moved up my appointments as much as I could. On January 10th, I will be allowed to book my booster/3rd dose. I still don't know when I'll actually receive it.

These are facts, with maybe a little opinion thrown in. Despite allowance for some of this being actually-unexpected, our government is always days or weeks behind, and then they panic. Also: these rules are decrees, not democracy—the Assembly was bypassed. We are in a bad place.
